In context
The G20 summit was covered by anchormen from all over the world. The financial crisis is no longer just a problem of America; it is a problem for the world. All eyes and cameras were turned to London, where the summit was held. The opinions on the gathering of 20 world leaders were mixed among news reporters. For example, European editorialists were in two minds about the results of the summit. Some said it was a historical moment that would create new order, others believed the summit had found no specific solutions; it only deepened the financial and political differences among countries.

The summit was broadcast not only via TV stations. For the first time in history a media convention was broken. Fifty of the most influential and knowledgeable bloggers were allowed to disseminate their views live from the summit. It was an unprecedented event as netizens from all over the world were able to become involved and had the possibility of influencing the world leaders on key issues. As one blogger said: “There is a huge increase in the number of people around the world using digital tools to inform themselves and then contribute to debates about the issues that affect their lives.”

News coverage that was once only reported by professional journalists is today being shown via video livestreaming, Skype broadcasts, tweets and podcasts. People want to be part of important global decision-making processes. They want to be live witnesses of the changes happening now.
